Hostas and other shade-loving plants by Richard Bird with David Tarrant
Have you got a shady spot in your yard or garden you have been neglecting? Is your backyard so hot in the summer that it is impossible to sit out during the day without getting well done? Is there a problem spot under your fir trees that you just don`t know what to do with? If you have pondered these questions or any others about shade and its potential or lack of it , this is the book for you.
Richard Bird has put together this very informative book to help even the most amateur of gardeners tackle the question of what to put in the shade. I must admit I have a few problem spots in my yard that I have chosen to ignore because I just couldn`t imagine something interesting that would grow in such difficult areas. In this book the reader is presented with a wide range of plant possibilities matched to several different types of shade,(who even knew there were different categories to shade) different types of soil, different climate zones, different seasons and many other factors to consider.
Plants are listed, described and illustrated in color photo along with a commentary of what to expect from certain plants in specific conditions. As well, there is information on maintenance, propagation, characteristics and a full index of hosta species and other shade-loving plants with plant descriptions and pictures.
After reading this book I feel better equipped to tackle those neglected shady spots in my yard and prepared to actually plan some shade in the areas that are unbearable in the summer. If you are looking for information and ideas about shade gardens this is a good resource book to have.
