It seems I was just looking at seed catalogues and planning perennial beds and now all of a sudden its time to think about bulbs. That`s right, Fall is just around the corner I`m sorry to say. Actually, Fall is a very exciting time in the garden, mostly because many gardeners are preparing for Spring again with the planting of bulbs. If you are one of those gardeners who enjoy a good show of crocuses, tulips, daffodils, muscari, snowdrops and the like then you will no doubt enjoy this month`s book.
Spring Bulbs, by Peter McHoy is a great little book full of bulb planting suggestions, inspirational pictures, bulb information and cataloguing and more. This book does a really good job of explaining what a bulb, tuber, corm and rhizome are and how each produces a flower. As well, there are plenty of ideas on how to use bulbs to achieve spring color and beauty, not only in your garden but also in your house, in pots outside and even in your lawn. I really like the great step by step pictures and instructions on how to buy bulbs, plant, force and naturalize bulbs, bulb care, feeding bulbs and symptoms and remedies for pests and other problems.
This book does a great job of condensing some really important bulb information, into a simple, readable guide all gardeners can use. I was actually feeling a little melancholy about the end of my summer garden closing in on me but this book picked me up and gave me something to look forward to in the next month of gardening.
