The above quotation is dated 17 years ago. Does it matter if our little, middle-class hobby island gardens are organic or not? Well, one of the Pender Island Garden Club's main objectives (as published in our New Members' leaflet each year) is "To educate Pender Island Gardeners about environmental issues, and to promote environmentally-friendly gardening practices". As a group, we believe the answer is a fervent yes. Our next presentation will be on Thursday 13th March at 1 pm in the Parish Hall when we are privileged to have Sheena Adams come from Port Alberni to continue enlightening us about organic gardening. Sheena writes passionately and persuasively on organic gardening topics in "GardenWise" magazine, and is the founder/owner of Urban Greenery, a garden centre which offers only organic fertilizers and organic remedies for pest and disease control in gardens. (To this end, Sheena has created her own brand of organic plant food called "Sheena's Best".) She will explain the must-have items for your organic garden care basket, including helpful organic tips and solutions for the most common and troublesome problems encountered in both ornamental and edible gardens. As well, she will talk about feeding the soil naturally, building up up up its nutrients, beneficial bacteria and micro organisms. You will be able to take home helpful write-ups and organic inspiration. So be sure not to miss this!
