Lilies are a fabulous summer blooming bulb suitable for garden beds or garden containers. They prefer a full sun location, however a part day of sun is also favorable as the bloom will last longer and not “Spend” so quickly in our summer heat.
Lilies are often grown as cut flowers, they add body and fragrance to summer bouquets and are often indulged in for summer wedding arrangements.
Feed your lily at planting time using an organic granular feed, then from bud on through bloom feed using a liquid 4*2*3 every two weeks. When planting lilies, either in a pot or in the ground, remember to always plant them three times as deep as the bulb size, this will stabilize the lily, allowing it to hold it bloom stable and strong incase of summer winds. As for spacing, in a 14" wide container you can squeeze three bulbs in for a great full effect, in the garden give them some room to grow into by allowing 1 square foot of garden space per bulb. Late March through April is the ideal time to nestle lily bulbs in the ground, and remember they are very winter hardy to - 46 c. so no need to lift them.
For those of you who love lilies but suffer from summer allergies consider planting the pollen and fragrant free kiss lilies, they are wonderful cut flowers without the suffering!
