Some plants evoke romance by the mere mention of their names. Toss in a bit of history, fragrance and beauty and you've found a sure way to add atmosphere and character to your garden.

For stirring the sweetest sentiments it would be hard to top Sweet Peas. Sweet Peas are a classic. They are exquisitely beautiful and headily fragrant. In late summer you just can't get enough of them. To guarantee an explosion of colour on your trellises and railings that will translate into endless bouquets start planting sweet pea seeds now. Begin your "Sweet Pea" De Grand Prix.

Here are some pointers to help ensure success:

    1. Soak the seeds for six hrs.
    2. Sew directly into the ground, 1/2" deep in late February using well drained, organically enriched soil.
    3. Water regularly at the base of the plants.
    4. Provide structure for tall varieties, and pinch to encourage lots of branches.
    5. Pick flowers often to encourage blooming, and thin plants when necessary to reduce mildew.

Sweet Pea seeds are available now and while you're at it, buy the jumbo pack - you can never have enough.

Other Romantic Vines to Enjoy include the Passion Flower Vine (Passiflora "Incense" and the New Dawn Rose (Rosa "New Dawn")
