Lets start off the year with the greatest New Years Resolutions ever, recycling! The easiest way to recycle is to compost. Good for the environment and the garden. By reducing your waste you'll add pounds of rich soil to your garden ever. A great project is to start with a composting worm box. This is an inexpensive Saturday afternoon project.
Here is what you'll need:
- 1 - 35 litre, either plastic or wooden,
Shredded newspaper, enough to lightly fill box halfway
- A large handful of red wriggler worms
Compost your left over veggies and fruit no meat products of course!
- 2 handfuls of a combined mix - sand, soil and water
- Drill with 6mm bit
Method:
1. Drill 12 - 6 mm holes in the bottom of the container.
2. Shred newspaper, dampen it, and then mix with the soil and sand.
3. Mix all together and place in container.
4. Now add your worms and compost.
5. Put lid on and place container on bricks (so that water will drain out) in a cool room, the porch or balcony work great. Keep adding your compost and soon the original bedding will look like rich earth and will be ready to use!
6. Your garden will thank you, and so will the garbage man!
Tip:
Good rule of thumb is to use 1lb of compost to every 2lbs of red wriggler worms.
Red wriggler worms are available at local composting centers or ask your local nurseries!
Worms are natural aerators and help to keep your soil loose and free, allowing plants to develop a good root system!
