The dog days of summer are hear and just as you're set to kick back and relax those pesky aphids are getting to work. They show up when you least expect it. If you notice buds and leaves covered in very small green insects with symptoms of stickiness or black soot, you'll know they've set up shop. Luckily there are organic ways to keep them under control, such as ladybugs or a quick spray of soap and water. There are also many products available at your local nurseries, so go ahead and fight back!
Soap & Water
Mix water with
1 Tb of liquid soap
1tsp corn oil
In a 500ml clean spray bottle.
Spray infected areas thoroughly; repeat every 10 days.
Ladybugs
Release your ladybugs early in the morning, at first light, onto infected plants. If there is no moisture on the plant mist gently with cool water. The hungry ladybugs will feast until all the aphids are gone. They will then fly away to other feeding areas nearby. Ladybugs are a great project for children and are available from local nurseries and insect factories.
