Sunflowers: what a perfect name for a blossom that always turns its face to the sun! And right now sunflowers or Helianthus Annus are in their prime.
When you think of sunflowers chances are you'll immediately picture the large Russian Giants. But sunflowers come in a rainbow of colours including reds and burgundies . Look for varieties like Prada Red, Sunseed, Valentine, and Florentine. These are all multi-flowering and will produce beautiful blossoms until late fall. However these flowers don't produce edible seeds - only the large Russian sunflowers produce the seeds for roasting and eating.
But for sheer exuberant colour plant some of these new varieties in your garden next spring - like the big Russians, their faces worship the sun.
