Well most of us have made shortbread, chocolate chunk, or oatmeal cookies; very few of us have made cookies for the birds. This is a fun project, especially if you have little ones around. These cookies are not only easy to make, they are fun to hang outside or wrap up and give as gifts. This particular recipe will help to attract both small and large birds.
You'll need:
1 1/2 cup lard
1 1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup sunflower seeds
2 1/2 cups rolled oats
2 1/2 cups cornmeal
1-cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
Waxed paper, cookie cutters, ribbon, and cookie sheet.
What to do:
- Line the cookie sheet with waxed paper and place cookie cutters on top.
- Using low heat, melt the lard and peanut butter. Add in remaining ingredients, blend well.
- Spoon into cookie cutters. Poke a hole, to string the ribbon through, near the top of the cookie.
- Place sheet into freezer for 3-5 days. Remove cookies from cutters and peel away the waxed paper. Thread ribbon and hang outside for the birds to enjoy! Or wrap in cellophane, raffia and give to the bird lover on your list.
This recipe will make a dozen Outdoor Bird Cookies.
