Here on the West Coast we like to get a head start on our cool season veggies. At urbangreenery.com the favorite is the Mesclun Mix, or the "mixed up mess of baby greens."
It grows all season long; there is no end to the "BIG" salads around here. Lauraleah keeps the mesclun coming; she gets an early start with her mini cold frame. We are proud to demonstrate her growing ways as a weekend project.
What you will need:
1. Raised bed of rich well -drained soil, about 2' x4'.
2. Packages of Mesclun Mix seeds, mild, tangy, or Provencal (tip: purchase several packages as you'll want to re-seed throughout the summer)
3. An old wooden frame window; check salvage stores, call a local window supplier, or scour a garage sale!
4. Salad Dressing!
Sow seeds in Early March. Space ½" apart and pat firmly into soil, give a gentle mist. Place window over seeded area, it may be necessary to raise the window a few inches on one side to capture the spring sun, a brick on one end will work fine. Keep area moist and you will see germination in no time! Harvest young shoots often, as they grow back quickly. Re-seed area every three weeks. Your friends will love, so grow lots and share! Another easy and inexpensive project from urban greenery.
Enjoy!
