A great project you can do to occupy some winter time is to make tufa pots. What are Tufa pots? They are are pots made from a mixture of sand, peat moss, and cement. It is a simple project, that dates back to old English times. The pots look fantastic, antiquish and are totally durable. They add interesting structure to any garden, and can also be brought inside. Use them for succulents, bulbs, herbs, ferns, or any of your favorite plants.
You will need:
- Bag of Portland type 10 cement
- Bale of peat moss
- Bag of playsand
- Wheelbarrow and shovel
- Water
- Plastic mold, any old plastic nrsery pot will do
- Saran Wrap
Method:
1. Mix equal parts sand, peat moss, and cement in wheel barrow.
2. Add water to make a thichk consistency, texture should resemble porridge.
3. line your plastic mold with saran wrap.
4. Form tufa around the siodes of your mold. Place a hole in bottom for drainage.
5. Rinse out wheelbarrow and shovel.
6. Place in cool dry shed for three days, or until dry.
7. Remove gently from mold. A quick pull on the saran should help.
8. If a rough edge is wanted give a quick rub with a wire brush.
9. Plant up with your favorite plants.
