Window Boxes & Trellis

Planterbox/trellis:

This planter will require the following tools
    · miter saw... power or hand saw and miter box
    · nails/hammer
    · exterior grade glue
    · carpenters square or any small square

Materials needed:
- approximately 6' of 1x6 red cedar, redwood or any exterior grade wood available
- approx. 38' of 2"x ¼" thick lath (readily available).
- For a rigid, durable planter that will really stand up to the elements use ½" thick strips ripped off of larger stock. - The longest vertical lengths of lath shown are 5' long.
- The other two outside vertical pieces are approx. 3' 2".
- The center vertical piece is 2' 8" The cross pieces are all 2' long. The squares are 6"x6" (outside measure).

STEP ONE

cut pieces of lath to length as follows:
    2 pcs 5'
    2 pcs 3' 2"
    1 pc 2' 8"
    4 pcs 2'
    4 pcs 1' 4"
    8 pcs 6"

FRAME

Working from the center, lay out the three long vertical pieces 5.5" apart using a couple of spacer blocks (scrap wood) to evenly space the pieces. Make sure you align the pieces at the top and bottom. Now space the outside vertical pieces 4" from the existing pieces, making sure to always work off center, vertically and horizontally using spacer blocks. Now lay out the horizontal pieces starting with the first two pieces from the center.

Space those pieces 10" on center and the next two 16" on center. Place the next two 18" on center and the next two 24" on center. These two support the squares (top and bottom), and do not run all the way through. Assemble the squares and affix them to the cross pieces with glue and nails for maximum strength. Finally space the last two pieces 30" on center. At this point, you should end up with approximately 2"of ends sticking out (the thickness of the lath) all around frame. All these measurements can be adjusted as long as the proportions are kept the same.

PLANTER BOX

The planter box is proportioned to fit within the two extreme outside vertical pieces.

The front sides and back are constructed of 1"x 6" material. The fronts of the side pieces are cut at a 7 degree angle. The back is simply one piece of 1"x6" cut to fit. The front is constructed of 1"x6" ripped down to 1 ½ " widths, ends mitered at 45 degrees and a 1" reveal on ends. Again, all the pieces are assembled with glued for long lasting strength and durability.
