Add zip and zing to your recipes with garlic (Allium sativum). Garlic adds unbeatable flavour and it's good for you. Garlic is even easy to grow.
Fresh garlic is a treat. It stores well so you may as well grow lots of it. Plant the bulbs in rich, well-drained, friable soil in early fall or spring. Place the cloves 2" deep and 6" apart. Harvest in late summer when the leaves are about half dry. Hang the bulbs in a shed or greenhouse in dim light with plenty of air circulation. Three weeks later they should be dry enough for storage. Store at room temperature in well ventilated netting.
Tip: Replant bulbs annually for an unlimited supply. And don't just plant plain garlic - be brave and try some of the new varieties such as Red Russian or Purple Yugoslavian! Remember, fall is a great time to plant your garlic!
